Mural Project Reflections from Artist, Kelly Brown

When we came into the mural project painting group, the canvas seemed endless.  It appeared to be a gigantic piece of white canvas that went on forever and ever.  How would we ever fill it? What would we say?

People were there for a variety of different reasons. Some people had experienced homelessness very recently and were still in transition.  They were no longer on the street, but not yet experiencing the stability and security they desired.

Others were still on the street and actively engaged in the struggle to end that phase of their journey.  One person didn't see himself as an artist, and just came to possibly make twenty dollars.  There were some who resonated with the title of "artist" and wanted to make a statement.  They wanted to show both sympathy, as well as empathy for those living on the streets and in shelters.  They wanted to express that those experiencing homelessness are not "ghosts" or "apparitions," but real live human beings who have a presence and an existence on this planet even if they have no residence. The mural painters wanted to affirm the dignity of all human beings no matter what their present station in life may be.

The first step in the process involved putting white paint on the canvas. There was no dramatic transformation, but at least brush had been put upon canvas! The next step was more visible and involved as different shades of background color were applied.  It ascended from dark gray to sky blue. A bridge and steps were added.  Both of these were powerful symbols.  The bridge connects from where one begins to where one wants to go. The steps represented ascension of people who were in transition.  Underneath the bridge, those still experiencing homelessness were located in the dark shades of chaos and confusion. All were recognized in their various stages and understood in their proper context. Everyone is in various stages on the journey of life.

Our final feat up till now was the addition of the words... "here but not forgotten!"  It recognized that those experiencing homelessness are present.  They are not going anywhere. They are not forgotten by those who have completed that stage of the journey and remember those they left behind in the streets.

The canvas is no longer blank. It has a life of its own. It has been molded and shaped into a beautiful creation by a collective process of caring artists.  The work continues. The journey does as well.

Meet Steve Braudt, Artist and Volunteer

As a volunteer and visiting guest artist at The Art Project, Houston, I was blessed with the experience of Life, Love, Belief, Prayer, and Faith!  These are more than just mere actions or words to the people of The Art Project they are a ministry of words and actions that call, push, and urge us to take a journey. Regardless of if we are seeking a corporate journey or a more personal spiritual path.  As I witnessed people entering into this area of art and wonder, I knew without a doubt, I was in the company of Christians that cared and loved deeply for those around them and for the art that they strived to create.

One of my professors at seminary, Dr. Dwight Judy writes, “Wherever there is an act of creation,
there is God.  God is a universal and eternal process of creating and sustaining the universe and every created
entity.”[1] hat is what I witnessed at The Art Project, Houston, a place where God is seenand experience in the act of creation!

Steve Braudt is an artist and UMC pastor studying at Garrett-Theological Seminary. He came and received a week at the Bread of Life, Inc. learning, serving and sharing in community with us.
We celebrate the that Steve and others in his conference kicked off The Art Project, OCA this week!

A few weeks ago, Malichia joined a group of artists from "The Art Project, Houston" a project of the Bread of Life, on a visit to MOCHA studios. He was inspired by the three-dimensional art that filled the space and returned to the art studio at the Bread of Life, Inc. ready to create some three-dimensional art pieces.  He has created a number of pieces since that visit. Some he has gifted to people in his community and others he has offered to be exhibited in upcoming shows for The Art Project, Houston.

One of his first three-dimensional creations is a spectacular piece titled, "Sunset Over the Sea." He created it out of reused and found objects he collected as he walked the streets of Houston. "Sunset Over the Sea" was first exhibited at Cups for Change, and was purchased this past weekend at ArtFest 2012.  It was an exciting moment for Malichia and TAPH team.

When the studio doors opened today, one of "The Art Project, Houston" participants walked through the door with a surprise cake of support and love for the new joy Malichia has found in the medium of three-dimensional mixed media art. Needless to say the room was filled with many smiles and lots of joy feasting on this treat.

ArtFest 2012 at John Wesley UMC

Friday and Saturday (September 14 & 15) The Art Project, Houston (TAPH) a project of the Bread of Life, Inc. participated in ArtFest 2012 at John Wesley UMC. We exhibited a number of pieces of art created by participants from the Bread of Life, as well as clay Bread of Life coasters created & donated by the youth of Faithbridge UMC who volunteered at the Bread of Life, Inc. over the summer. It was a great show and opportunity to share with another Houston community The Art Project, Houston story and have fun in the process.

We celebrate with all of the TAPH artists who had work exhibited at ArtFest 2012. The work was beautiful and was affirmed by many who stopped by to view. We want to congratulate Larry and Malichia who both had art pieces purchased at the show.

We look forward to our next exhibition during the month of October at The Doshi House in Third Ward (3419 Dowling Street, Houston, Texas 77004). We will be exhibiting and selling a number of charcoal art expressions created by TAPH participants and artist friends of The Art Project, Houston.
Online gallery of the art created by participants in The Art Project, Houston coming soon.
