I love this quote, because it points to the deep well of creativity and possibility within each of us to co-create a better tomorrow full of life, beauty, and hope. As the Project Manager of The Art Project, Houston a new art therapy program of the Bread of Life, Inc., I have the pleasure of seeing what is within some of the student artists come out on paper, canvas, clay and other art mediums on a daily basis. Every day I learn more and more about the talent walking and living on the streets of Houston, as well as the power art has to heal and change lives.
One of the joys of my job is seeing the subtle, yet very real changes, in the lives of people who encounter TAPH. From watching as someone decides after years of not touching her hair that it is time to "Take the dirt out" (get a haircut), to someone making the big decision after finishing the 4-week Art Class that he was ready to return to his family in California or a young guy in his early 20's finally being able to articulate his dream to be a cartoonist and start to BELIEVE that art school is in his immediate future in Austin, Texas.
One of the highlights recently has been witnessing the satisfaction and joy in student artists' eyes as they sell their first paintings and see they art reproduced on greeting cards that people delight in. It is really something when TAPH student artists offer something that people cannot help but see, admire and connect with.
The TAPH blog will be a place where we share stories being written and art being created at the Bread of Life, Inc. from some of the most talented artists living on the streets of Houston, Texas. We believe we all have something beautiful to share with the world. We hope this will be a place where you hunger for beauty is fed and you are also inspired to tap into the creative spirit that is within you.
