Yesterday I had the opportunity to travel with The Art Project, Houston to Texas Southern University. We attended the new gallery show, Get on Board: Stories of the Los Angeles to Houston Freedom Ride. As I walked pass walls bearing images of our messy past, I could not help but feel uneasy. There were photographs showing the forced brutality on these noble men and woman who fought for justice and equality during the Civil Rights Movement.
I began to look around the room at the mixed crowd I was with, and started to reflect on the pain, anger, and sorrow that we each carry. Some of the emotions I could place on faces during the day-to-day shuffle, while others are much more deeply embedded, myself included. I started making parallels with the history I was facing in the
gallery, and the present circumstances of the people I was surrounded by. The only conclusion I can render is hope. We all have heavy thoughts, experiences, and images we hold tightly from our past. The hope is that we can leave them on the canvas, step forward, and bring some clarity to the chaos, whether it’s through reconciliation with our self or with others.
As we continue to move forward at The Art Project, the anticipation is that beauty will be created from destruction and hope instead of despair. If a nation can continue to seek healing from such a broken point in history, then we should seek to follow those who were willing to risk everything to experience peace.
